There are many opportunities for Technicians to work onboard a Cruise Ship.
Most ships will have a main theatre which will range in size depending on the company and size of the ship. Some of the larger ships can have theatres holding over 1000 people. With different production shows each night there can be as many as 15 technicians working in the theatre let alone the rest of the ship.
This will include:-
- Sound Engineers
- Lighting Technicians
- Props Technicians
- Stage Technicians
- Technical Production Manager
- Spotlight Operator
- Moving Light Technician
- Automation Technician
- Stage Manager
There will also be General Technicians working all over the ship taking care of all the other areas which include bars, restaurants and outside areas. There will often be bands and musicians who will perform all over the ships, so a good knowledge of working with bands would be advantageous.
Most Ships will also have Broadcast Engineers onboard. Broadcast Engineers will be responsible for running the ship-wide TV channels. Even when you are out at sea people will still want to watch their favourite programmes and sports.
Broadcast Engineers may film and produce their own programmes onboard the ship and then broadcast them to the guests onboard.
Working on a Cruise Ship
Working onboard a ship can be very hard work. Most Technicians will work 7 days a week and often for long hours. However the rewards can also be great. Depending on which ship you work on, you may gain experience with some state of the art equipment and there is the opportunity to learn a number of new skills.
Depending on the ships itinerary you may get the chance to travel all over the world, meeting new people and seeing places that you may not have otherwise seen.
